Working hard to resettle new refugee families, especially Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders; grants for legal defense and childcare support; stepped-up employment assistance.

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an order suspending a 45-year-old program that created a legal immigration path for refugees from danger spots around the globe. That and later administration actions have thrown into limbo the fates of thousands who had been cleared to come to the U.S. and were set to travel when the abrupt policy shift in Washington upended their plans.

In spite of recent changes in Washington, Neighbors for Refugees is busy helping legal refugees to the U.S. from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Nicaragua, and other countries. We are fulfilling our mission to help our new neighbors become self-supporting and fully contributing members of our community.

This is the extraordinary story of Lima, Nopal, and their family, who were resettled in Pelham, New York through Neighbors for Refugees. Through Neighbors, this refugee family was able to be resettled in New York.

Understanding Recent Changes to Private Sponsorship Policy: Welcome.US

Over the past three years, Neighbors for Refugees has provided approximately $750,000 of assistance to new refugee families and families who are already in the U.S through our resettlement program and grants. In total, we’ve helped approximately 360 families (over 1,100 individuals).

Neighbors for Refugees is determined to welcome and support refugee families – both those soon-to-arrive and those who are already members of our communities – no matter what happens under the new Trump administration. Neighbors’ financial and volunteer support helps refugee families meet their many (and likely increasing) challenges: housing, food, learning English, employment, school enrollment, tutoring, navigating the health system, and the like.

As you can imagine, for anyone deeply involved in welcoming refugees to our country, we were surprised and saddened by the election results on November 5th. The incoming administration has expressed hostility to foreigners, and we expect the pipeline for entry into the U.S. for refugees will be severely curtailed, if not almost closed completely.
