The Supreme Court has ruled that it will allow the Trump administration end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for Venezuelan refugees in the United States.
During the Biden administration in 2023, Venezuela was included under the Temporary Protected Status program for "extraordinary and temporary" conditions. The Supreme Court ruling lifted a lower court's injunction and allows the Department of Homeland Security to cancel an 18-month extension granted in January. TPS is a humanitarian designation under U.S. law that designates certain countries as unsafe to return to, based on conditions such as war, natural disasters or other crises. Currently, those countries include Afghanistan, Cameroon, Haiti and Ukraine as well as Venezuela. About 600,000 Venezuelans are protected under two TPS designations, about 350,000 of which are impacted by the recent ruling and may soon face deportation.
