The Department of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that it will allow Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to lapse for immigrants from Honduras and Nicaragua.

This move ends 25 years of protections for both countries, first established after the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in 1999. When it goes into effect, 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, it will impact about 50,000 people in the United States, who now may face deportation. This follows the recent revocation of immigrant protections from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Haiti, and Venezuela, after which those affected have been encouraged to self-deport.

TPS typically lasts for 18 months and must be extended by the federal government. The first Trump administration attempted to terminate TPS for both countries, but was set back by legal challenges. The Biden administration then extended the protections through July 5, 2025.
