Lima and Nopal Abasi fled Afghanistan with their three children, escaping at night to seek safety. Lima, a women’s rights activist, and Nopal, who worked for an American construction company, first sought refuge in Pakistan, where they lived for three years—six months of that in a dangerous refugee camp.

After arriving in the U.S. with nothing, Neighbors for Refugees stepped in with critical refugee resettlement assistance. We helped the Abasi family secure housing in Pelham, NY, provided food, and helped the family begin rebuilding their lives. The Abasis are now part of a growing community supported by dedicated refugee resettlement programs.
